That ALWAYS seems to be the question. Passports are not required for "closed-loop" cruises that start and end in the USA. A closed-loop cruise is basically a cruise that starts and ends at the same port.
If you do not have a passport, you will need a state-issued birth certificate and a photo ID. Start getting all of that together now!
Now, with that said, a passport is REALLY nice to have and my family all have one now. We have cruised with the boys on two cruises without them but it always was nagging me in the back of my mind that if something happenned and we had to get off the boat at any port and fly home due to illness or if we missed the boat for wahtever reason, being stuck in Mexico or the Bahamas without a passport could be a really big pain. There is still PLENTY of time to get a passport if you don't have one. They cost a little over $100 but an adult passport will last you for 10 years! So, really, if you break it down over 10 years, for only a little over $10 a year, it's not a bad deal.
For those of us travelling with kids under the age of 18 that are not ours, we will need a letter from the parents giving us permission for the trip out of the country and for any excursions or on-board activities that they want to do that require a signed waiver.
